RYA Day Skipper Theory

This course provides an enjoyable and comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers. It will equip you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day while we also cover night lights to introduce you to night cruising.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is essential preparation for our RYA Day Skipper Practical course.

Whilst there are no pre-requisites to join the couse and it assumes no knowledge of navigation, it is essential that you have some sailing experience, which you may have gained through our RYA Competent Crew course or through our RYA Level 2 dinghy course.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is taught over 40 hours with two exam papers. The syllabus can be completed over 5 days or over 3 weekends (which also includes the VHF Marine Radio (SRC) course, if required)

What you cover on the course
Course topics include:
The basics of seamanship
The essentials of costal navigation and pilotage
Chartwork
Electronic charts
Position Fixing
Plotting a course to steer
Weather forecasting and meteorology
Tides
Collision regulations
Emergency and safety procedures including use of flares, harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts

Course logistics
Courses are held at our marina (Royal Clarence) in Gosport and generally run between 09.00-18.00hrs each day- although you can expect some homework from your instructor too!

If you have a small group or family who wish to study together, then we can come to you!

Course costs include refreshments throughout (teas, coffees etc) and packed lunch each day (with our now famous homemade cakes!). We also include your RYA Day Skipper Student Pack which is essential to the course (usual cost £35.00) and your RYA Log Book.

Free parking is available at the marina. Local hostel or B&B accomodation is available and can be arranged if required (this cost is not included).
